In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go…

Prov. 3:5-6 I will trust in the Lord as much as I am able as long as it doesn’t cost me too much, make life inconvenient or keep me from fitting in with everyone around me. I will ask and expect Him to bless my plans. I acknowledge Him as Lord, but don’t really let that affect the details of my life. I do what I want, when I want and how I want. I will not allow anyone, including God to impose what I think are unrealistic expectations on me. Then, because I’ve given Him some trust and followed Him with part of my life, God better make my paths straight.

The Message says it this way, “Don’t try to figure out everything on your own.”

The Promise of Brighter Days

For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

Hebrews 12:6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.

Replacing Lies with Truth

The First Temptation

Genesis 3:1&4 (NLT) “Did God really say…?” “You won’t die!”...

1 Cor 10:13 (NIV) No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

When our experience doesn't match God's word, is it His word that is wrong or is it our experience?

To walk in the promise of freedom, we must replace lies with truth.

John 8:31-32 (NLT) 31 Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Philippians 4:8 (NLT) Fix your thoughts on what is true…

LIE: “Once the temptation is strong enough, there’s nothing I can do to stop.”

TRUTH: “He will give me a way out”

LIE: “I’m never going to be able to change. I’m always going to be stuck in my sin.”

TRUTH: “I am not a slave to sin. I am free to choose a different way.”

Romans 6:15-18 (NLT) 15 Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not! 16 Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living. 17 Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you. 18 Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living.

LIE: “It’s just too hard to keep God’s commands.”

TRUTH: “His commands aren’t burdensome. It’s much “harder” not to keep his commands.”

1 John 5:3-4 (NLT) 3 Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith.

LIE: “I don’t believe God will forgive or accept me.”

TRUTH: “God forgives and cleanses me.”

1 John 1:8-9 (NIV) 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

- Replacing lies with truth was part of Jesus’ strategy

Matthew 4:1-11 (NLT) 4 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. 2 For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry. 3 During that time the devil came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, 6 and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’” 7 Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’” 8 Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 “I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.” 10 “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’” 11 Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.

What lies am I believing? What is the truth of God’s word?

Practical steps

•  Discover the lies you are believing and write them down.
• How do I know the lies I’m believing? The Holy Spirit and a trusted friend can help.
• Write down and memorize scriptures that replace the lies with truth.
• Quote your scriptures before, during, and after temptation.
• Add to your list in each season of life.
• Engage in the other spiritual practices that bring freedom.
• Prayer, Confession, Fasting, Worship, Church. Scripture Reading.

Light of the World

John 8:1-12 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

The first promise – when you follow Jesus, you will never walk in darkness.

The second promise – instead, you will have the light of life.

1 John 1:7 But if we walk (living) in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

Rest for Your Soul

Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

The posture most natural to Jesus is not a pointed finger but open arms.

The point in saying that Jesus is lowly is that he is accessible.

You don't need to unburden yourself to come to Jesus. Your very burden is what qualifies you to come.

His yoke for us is kindness.

Jesus doesn't just meet us at our place of need; he lives in our place of need.

This is why we need our Bibles. Our natural intuition can only give us a God like us.

His life proves his heart.

“Yes, he is the fulfillment of the Old Testament hopes and longings. Yes he is one whose holiness causes even his friends to fall down in fear, aware of their sinfulness. Yes, he is a mighty teacher, one who’s authority outstripped even that of the religious PhD s of the day. To diminish any of these is to step outside of vital historic orthodoxy. But the dominant note left ringing in our ears after reading the Gospels, the most vivid and arresting element of the

portrait, is the way the Holy Son of God moves toward, touches, heals, embraces, and forgives those who least deserve it yet truly desire it. -Dane Ortlund

His most natural instinct, is to move toward that sin and suffering, not away from it.

Jesus’ entire ministry was one of giving back to undeserving sinners their humanity.

“Jesus is love covered over in flesh.” The Puritan - Thomas Goodwin

When you come to Jesus for mercy and love and help in your anguish and perplexity and sinfulness, you are going with the flow of his own deepest wishes, not against them.

Hebrews 4:14-16 ESV “Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

Only Jesus can give you the rest, relief, and healing that you need.

The Promise of God’s Presence

Promise of Healing

Jesus did not tell us to pray for the sick, he told us to HEAL the sick.

1. Lay Hands on them.

Matthew 8:3 “When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, if you’re willing, you can make me clean." And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, "I am willing; be clean." And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.”

Jesus never said I’m not willing to heal.

Whenever someone came and asked for healing, Jesus healed them.

Matthew 8:14 when Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw peters mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever, he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.

2. Rebuke a Demon that is causing the sickness.

Luke 4:38 “Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.”

Matthew 17:18

“Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment.”

In Mark 9:25 “And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again."”

3. COMMAND HEALING

Mark 7:32-35

“And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged him to lay his hand on him. And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue. And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, "Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened." And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly.”

Matthew 12:9,13 “He went on from there and entered their synagogue. And a man was there with a withered hand.... Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And the man stretched it out, and it was restored, healthy like the other.”

Acts 9:32-35

“Now as Peter went here and there among them all, he came down also to the saints who lived at Lydda. There he found a man named Aeneas, bedridden for eight years, who was paralyzed. And Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; rise and make your bed." And immediately he rose. And all the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord.”

Acts 14:8-10

“In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth and had never walked. He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed and called out, “Stand up on your feet!” At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.”

4. THERE'S A PLACE FOR PRAYING FOR PEOPLE AGAIN.

Mark 8:22-25

They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?” He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.” Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.”

5. Instruct an act of faith.

John 9:1, 6-7

As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. “Go,” he told him, “Wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So, the man went and washed, and came home seeing.”

Luke 17:12-14

As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.”

6. Anoint People with oil.

In Marks gospel it says that they went out and preached that people should repent, they drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them. “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

James 5:14-16

Notice the unconditional nature of the promise. We have no scriptural warrant to end the healing prayer with the faith destroying phrase, “if it be thy will”. God has made it perfectly clear in his word it’s his will to heal the sick. Period. Jesus never prayed for the sick in a conditional manner.

It’s God’s will to heal. Period.

“We do not need to make long prayers for the sick. When we have faith to say it, a word of command can be effective. “Be healed in Jesus’ name”. Jesus healed with a touch or a word - most often with a command “be thou clean he said to the leper, “to the sick of palsy he said, “Get up, pick up your mat and go to your house”, to the deaf man’s ears he commanded “be opened”, to the man with the withered hand he said, “stretch out your hand” and it was instantly healed...”

If you're going to pray for the sick, it’s good to be prayed up.

7. There’s a waiting in the presence of the Lord.

“The one who feels led to pray for the sick should take the time to ask God how he would have him to proceed.”  - The Holy Spirit and You, Dennis Bennet

“Where we have desired to see healing and have not seen it, the fault is not with God but with man. We are quick to say God didn’t do it, I guess he isn't ready to heal me, yet the word of God says that he is and right now.”                                              - The Holy Spirit and You, Dennis Bennet

Don't wait to pray until you need to pray.

Belief says, “I think he can.”

Faith says, “I Know he will”.

LET THE PROMISE STAND.

The Desires of Your Heart

Psalms 37:4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.

Psalms 37:23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way.

God Keeps His Promises

The dictionary definition of “promise” is:

1. A declaration that something will or will not be done or given

2. An express assurance on which expectation is to be based.

Synonyms for include:

●     Guarantee

●     Vow

●     Covenant

●     Oath

Sometimes people get mad at God for not keeping a promise He _________ _____________ __________. 

Sometimes it’s that God made that promise, but it includes a command they decided to __________.

For all the promises of God in Him are yea, and in Him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

2 Corinthians 1:20 (NLT)

 For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” ascends to God for his glory.

Revelation 3:14 …These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation.

AMEN:

God’s promises are not “if” or “maybe”, they are “__________”.
