THE ARMOR OF GOD - 7

The Sword of the Spirit

Pastor Landon Henry

Ephesians 6:10-20 (ESV)

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

  • The sword is the soldier’s _______________ weapon.

  • The sword of the Spirit is the ______ ____ _______.

and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, 11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth, It will not return to me empty,

Helmet of Salvation

Pastor David Henry

Ephesians 6:10-17 NLT 10 Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. 16 In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. 17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

The Breastplate of Righteousness

Pastor Landon Henry

Ephesians 6:10-13 Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by his vast strength. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens. 13 For this reason take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand. 14 Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest...

Genesis 20:6 Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that you have done this in the integrity of your heart, and it was I who kept you from sinning against me. Therefore, I did not let you touch her.

The Belt of Truth

Ephesians 6:10-20 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the full armor of God…

2 Corinthians 2:11 so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.

John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

2 Corinthians 4:3-4 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

2 Timothy 1:7 (NLV) For God did not give us a spirit of fear. He gave us a spirit of power and of love and of a good mind.

Truth is the absolute standard by which reality is measured.

  •  Truth holds everything ___________________.

Ephesians 6:14 Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist…

  • We can’t live in enemy ____________________ and resist him without truth.

John 8:31-33 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you continue in my word, you really are my disciples. 32 You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 “We are descendants of Abraham,” they answered him, “and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will become free’?”

“Everything starts with deceptive ideas, or lies we believe (put our trust in and live by) about reality—mental maps that come from the devil, not Jesus, and lead to death, not life. But deceptive ideas get as far as they do because they appeal to our disordered desires, or our flesh.” —John Mark Comer, Live No Lies

John 8:44 You are of your father the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.

John 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

  • The truth will make you ______ before it makes you free.

1 Timothy 3:14-17 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

Mark 4:15 And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them.

Mark 4:20 But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”

The Full Armor of God

Pastor Landon Henry

Ephesians 6:10-11 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

What we’re up against:

1.  ___________ choices.

Romans 7:23-24 (ESV) but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?

2.  Sin’s ___________.

Romans 8:2 (ESV) For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

3.  Satan’s ___________.

“There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves (the devils) are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight.” —CS Lewis

Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens.

Daniel 7:25 (ESV) He shall speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High, and shall think to change the times and the law;

“He is happy for you to picture him as a cartoon character wearing a red jumpsuit with horns and carrying a pitchfork so that you won’t take him seriously. Meanwhile, like an opposing football team, his demonic realm watches your game film. They know your history, your weak spots, and your sin patterns. Their goal is to keep you from experiencing God’s will for your life. You’re not their first assignment. They’re good at what they do.” —Tony Evans

Some of the strategies of our enemy:

•  Satan ___________.

1 Corinthians 7:5 Do not deprive one another — except when you agree for a time, to devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again; otherwise, Satan may tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

In Acts 5:3 we see that Satan can tempt us to lie

In 1 Pet.5:6-10 we see that Satan can tempt us into despair

And in 2 Cor.2:10,11 we see that Satan tries to lead us to be unforgiving.

•  Satan ___________.

In Revelation 12:10 we learn that Satan accuses us before God- day and night.

•  Satan ___________

In Rev 2:10 we see that Satan has believers thrown into prison.

In Matt. 9:32 we see a man who couldn’t SPEAK because of Satans work, and Luke 9:42 we see Jesus delivering a child affected by a spirit that would throw him into convulsions.

Hebrews 2:14 points out that Satan holds the power of death.

1 Cor 5:5 indicates that Satan seems to have the power to destroy the flesh.

In 1 Thess 2:18 Satan hinders Paul’s ministry plans—

1 Thessalonians 2:17-18 … we greatly desired and made every effort to return and see you face to face. 18 So we wanted to come to you — even I, Paul, time and again — but Satan hindered us.

•  Satan ___________and ___________.

Ephesians 1:19-21 (ESV) “And what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power , and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.”

Romans 8:11 (ESV) If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
